Modern Reading privacy policy
Updated: 1 October 2026
Scope and contact
This policy describes the Modern Reading browser extension. The developer is Oskar Konczarek, Gudesstraße 43a, 29525 Uelzen, Germany. Contact: o.konczarek@gmail.com. The extension works independently of Oskar Lab and does not require an account or a connection to our servers.
Website text and addresses
The extension accesses text on supported webpages and temporarily changes its presentation by highlighting word beginnings. It reads the current tab's address to identify the website and apply your exclusions. This processing takes place on your device. Page text and visited URLs are not sent to the developer or any external service. The extension does not maintain a browsing-history log. The text being processed may contain personal information depending on the webpage; it is not extracted for profiling or other purposes.
Local settings and retention
chrome.storage.local stores the enabled state, highlighting strength, minimum paragraph length, interface language and excluded website origins (scheme, hostname and any port). It does not store article text or full visited-page paths. Settings remain until replaced, reset or removed with the extension. Reset clears website exclusions and restores reading defaults while preserving your chosen language. Removing the extension removes its local extension storage. Text references used for highlighting last only in the page's memory; reloading the page after disabling the extension restores its original presentation.
Permissions
HTTP/HTTPS website access and scripting allow automatic highlighting on supported pages and injection of the bundled content script. activeTab is used for the current page when you open the popup. storage keeps your local preferences. Browser restrictions still apply. You can pause reading, exclude sites, restrict site access in Chrome or uninstall the extension. No remote executable code is loaded.
Sharing, advertising and Limited Use
The extension does not transmit page content, website addresses or settings to us. It includes no analytics, advertising trackers or developer-operated backend. We do not sell this information, use it for advertising or credit decisions, or allow people at our end to read your page content. Its use is limited to the visible reading features and local preferences, in accordance with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.
Optional external links
Ko-fi and Patreon links open only when you choose them. Their logos are packaged locally; showing the popup does not contact those services. After opening a link, the destination receives the usual web request information and handles any account or payment information under its own policy. The extension does not receive payment details or require financial support. Visiting this policy or GitHub is also a separate website visit. Chrome and the Chrome Web Store operate under Google's own privacy terms.
Support and your choices
We cannot retrieve local page content or settings from your device. For support, send only the information you want to share and avoid sensitive page contents. If you email us, we process your address and message to answer the request, using Gmail; Google processes the message as part of that service. We keep correspondence as needed to handle the request and any applicable retention or legal-claims obligations, then delete it. Depending on the request, the legal basis is Article 6(1)(b) or (f) GDPR. Where applicable, you may request access, correction, erasure, restriction or portability, object to legitimate-interest processing, and complain to a supervisory authority, including the Lower Saxony data protection authority. Contact the address above.
This website and changes
Opening this page makes a normal request to the Oskar Lab website; its hosting and website processing are described separately in the website privacy information. The extension itself does not make that request automatically. We will update this policy when the extension's data handling changes. A new feature is not permission to reuse existing data for unrelated purposes.
